UNLUCKY LUCK - NICK

Most teenagers wouldn't want to waste away their afternoons to hold a job. But Nick never really minded. Although his mom had told him that his paycheck wasn't needed, he had first handedly seen the stress disappear from her features when he gave her his first paycheck to help pay for things around the house. And that's how it went for awhile. His minimum wage job helped him buy anything he could need. He had first saved up for a car, after helping his mom for a couple months, and then had gone to start paying for his own necessities. And it was great. The achievement he could get from having his own job and buying his own things. Today was going to be just another day on the job, or so he assumed, like he always did.

Today Electronics, sad name for a store really Nick always thought the owner should've given it a nicer name, was having a very slow day. As such, the three people that were staffed to work were shuffling around the store absentmindedly while awaiting guests. And when a customer did walk in the employees would look at each and fast walk to the customer. It was actually a pretty amusing sight. So far, Nick hadn't gotten a single one though. He was always in the back or even had his back turned when they walked in. Not that it really mattered as he got paid by the hour either way.

Figuring that he had to at least help one person though, he stationed himself fairly close the door. To make sure that none of the other employees would pester him, he set to arranging the DVDs on the stands. Some of the people that had come in here already had put DVDs where they didn't belong and no one had gotten to rearranging them yet. It was when the dinging of the front door set off that Nick turned his head towards the door. He took a quick glance at the girl before looking back to the store floor. Perfect. Josh and Sara were on the complete opposite side of the store.

Turning back to her, Nick went to head over there. But the way he turned away from his leaning position made his arm, that was currently propped up on the cellphone case end rack, put too much weight on the rack. And with wide eyes he watched it fall to the ground with a clash. Shit. His eyes flickered to Josh and Sara who had started laughing. With a slight hesitation, he stepped over the rack and continued on his path to the girl. He could always just pick that up as soon as he figured out what she needed. When he finally stepped in front of her he actually looked at her and what he saw made him pause a bit in silence. She looked just like an average girl. But he had never seen her in his school before, which meant that she had to go to the Academy. Not only that, but although she looked just like an everyday girl, there was something about her that he liked. Really liked even.

He glanced down at the lanyard that hung around his neck with his store ID. The ID had flipped around in his flop from a few minutes prior and he turned it the right way before clearing his throat and glancing back up at her. "Is there anything you need help with today?" He gave her an easy going smile after asking the question, his hands that were originally hanging by his side slid into his front pant pockets as he awaited what she might need.

Nick didn't have to wait long for the girl in front of him to answer back. He looked at her with curiosity as she started speaking and when she showed him her phone he gave a low whistle. The screen was really cracked, but surprisingly enough he had seen worse. At least this could be repaired. He heard her speak once again and the corners of his mouth lifted to a small smile. "Actually. It's not too bad. It'll be an easy fix. But it will cost a bit and take a bit of a wait." He looked at the phone again and pointed at it. "Can I see it for a minute?"

He waited a few moments for her to hand it over before he examined it a bit closer. Luckily it seemed like it was just the screen that was cracked. If he could take it off, he could just apply a new one to it. Nick glanced back up at her before speaking. "So it'll cost you about $75 to fix it. We are fairly inexpensive here and I've heard of some other places nearby costing over $100. If you do want to get it done right now, it should take me about 30 to 45 minutes." For the time being, he held the phone back out to her for her to take. "What'll it be?" He raised an eyebrow in question as he looked at her.

When he noticed a movement behind her head, his eyes flicked over to it. It didn't take but a moment for him to roll his eyes as he saw Josh standing there with Sara. They had moved from the back of the store to stand a few rows from them in order to hear the conversation happening between Nick and this mystery girl. Jesus. It was like working with a bunch of girls who always wanted to know the drama unfolding. He shook his head as another smile slipped to his face before he was looking back at the girl in front of him. But for some reason, the conversation that he had with his sister a few days ago slipped into his mind. He found himself wondering why he had never seen this girl before. If that meant that she went to the academy like that one boy his sister saw that brought her dog back to life. His eyebrows furrowed for a moment with his thoughts but as he realized where his thoughts were going, he shook his head to clear his thoughts as he focused back on her.

After Nick told her the price, it didn’t take long for her to confirm that she did indeed want him to repair it. He grinned at her enthusiasm. It really was nice to see that some people just got so happy when they were expecting such a high price on a phone screen replacement, and the charge was actually lower than what they would think. ”Sweet. Like I said. It shouldn’t take too long.” He was handed her phone once more. But when he looked behind her and saw that Josh and Sara had gotten even closer, he internally rolled his eyes and sighed at their antics. Seriously, how childish could they be?

As he looked at them, he noticed the girl he was helping turn to look as well. He didn’t see her turn to face him again as he was just trying to stare down the two, but after a couple moments their eyes widened and they were walking quickly to the back of the store. His eyebrows rose as he looked back at the girl in front of him as she turned back to him. He started to ask her what that was all about when she was instead questioning him. His eyes flicked to where she was putting her hair behind her ear and unconsciously he started smiling just a bit. But realizing how creeper that could be he forced his eyes to look back at her face instead.

He gave a small shrug before replying. ”It’s up to you. I’ll just be over at that counter,” he turned slightly to point at the cellphone booth area before turning back. ”So if you want to watch you can. Otherwise we have a great selection of movies and CDs.” He gave a small grin before look at the rack he had knocked over. His head turned back to her before she could speak. ”While you decide what you want to do, I’ll be picking up that rack.”

He at least had the decency to look the slightest bit ashamed before he turned and quickly walked over to the rack. His eyes caught on Josh and Sara who were whispering quite loudly. He barely picked up the words ‘weird changing eyes’ before he chose to ignore it for the time being; he had a job to do. He quickly picked the rack up and started putting the items back where they were supposed to go. He had to make sure everything was in the right section least someone come up to him and complain that the big pink and purple case wouldn’t fit their small iPhone. Well no shit Sherlock. That’s for a Galaxy. Can’t you read the case. He would think that but instead have to explain to them nicely that things got all mixed up.

As he finished up, he took a glance at the girl and couldn’t help but admire her from afar. At first glance you would probably just think she’s another pretty face, but Nick thought there was something more to her beauty. He stood up and shook his head as he walked to the cellphone booth figuring that if she wanted to come over and talk to him while he worked on her phone, she would.

The first part of fixing the phone was always one of the hardest parts. At least, that’s what Nick felt towards phone repairs. Other people had it as putting the screen on. But that was simple for the young man. He had a steady hand and when he placed screens down, he usually placed them down right the first time. As the girl walked up to the counter where Nick was to fix her phone, he gave her a small smile. He already had all the required tools out as well as the new phone screen, still in a box, to put back on. As she started speaking, Nick gave a small laugh as he nodded his head. Before he could speak though, she was introducing herself.

Harley. That was a nice name. His eyes flicked up to her as he gave her an actual smile. ”Nice to meet you. Nick. Though, you might’ve already known that.” He slightly held up the lanyard with his picture and nametag on it, before letting it drop back down. He set to work on separating the screen from the phone. It was difficult thanks to how little of room he had between the screen and the outside. Having to squeeze something even tinier into that space to then lift up the edge was always difficult. Either way, he was nodding his head to her earlier question.

”Pretty much. You just have to be careful to not mess up the rest of the phone when taking it off. And then when putting on the new one, it has to fit exactly right or everything will be off.” Okay, so it was harder to explain as well. But that’s why it was his job and she was paying him right? To do it, not to explain how to do it. His tongue stuck out of his mouth slightly as he concentrated on sliding the little plastic piece between the edges of the phone and the phone screen. After a few minutes of this the screen finally popped off. He grinned at his success before turning the cracked screen over in his hands with a raised eyebrow.

”If you don’t mind me asking, how did you crack it this badly?” He looked up to her as he placed the cracked screen to the side of everything and started opening the new box to get the nice unbroken one out. He glanced up at her again as he started taking everything off the new screen that need not be on there.

It didn’t take long to do what he had been doing, and it wouldn’t take much longer either. But the brief amount of talking he knew they could do in that amount of time, could tell you a lot about the person. And so far Nick was liking how…spunky Harley could be. And her little play on his name made him pause what he was doing and send her a lopsided smile as he gave a short laugh and shrugged. ”True enough. What’s my personality saying so far?” He gave a short pause before speaking again, ”why would I do that? That one wasn’t half bad. Mine are much worse.”

Taking off the screen was easy, but putting on the new one was a bit harder. As Harley started to talk about how she cracked it, Nick just shook his head. Some people could be so rude. ”Let me guess, they didn’t even apologize?” He raised an eyebrow at her for a moment before getting started on fitting the new screen. He had to raise and lower it a couple times until he fit in exactly right and wasn’t crooked in any way. He started pressing along the edges until the screen was snug in its place. ”Now that that’s done I have to turn it back on and go into the settings and make sure the touch capabilities are working.”

As he waited for the phone to turn back on he took a quick glance around the floor and saw the other two continuously looking over here. He looked at them in confusion, but their focus was snapped as another customer walked into the building. They looked at each other before starting to walk over to the customer. Nick shook his head and looked back at the phone. As he saw the background he couldn’t help but smile. ”Cute dog. My sister has an Australian Shepard. Is this one yours?” He looked back up at her for a moment before looking down and finding the settings in the phone.

His eyes saw another app right before he clicked on settings, and it made him hesitate for a moment before pressing setting anyways and going to the right thing. Soon enough he was going through the right tests and making sure that it all worked. He backed out of settings before going to the other app that he first noticed and opening it and entering some information. He then backed out of that one and closed both apps before finally looking up at Harley with a smile. He handed her back the phone before turning to the computer and starting to type out the charges and such. ”Well. That’s all done now. How does it look?” He looked back at her and leaned against the counter as he waited for her to get out whatever she was going to use to pay the bill, his smile not faltering.
