Steph was still rather mad about the whole having to go to boarding school thing. Lysander had been insistent though. Apparently he would just not stand for her spending eternity holed up in her apartment. Steph didn’t see why she couldn’t do that, but after the shouting match she didn’t feel like she had much of a choice. Lysander was scary when he was angry and she didn’t want to see any more of that. Besides he did have a point about her finishing out her education. Not that she would really need a degree as a vampire but it would make her feel a bit more normal.

Going to school was okay, it did give her some space from her unpleasant sire. What was not okay was the fact that she was going to have a roommate. Luckily it was another vampire so Steph didn’t have to constantly worry about hurting her, but that did mean she was going to have to be social. So much for having space. This is all your fault and I hate you she texted him before throwing her phone on the bed. She knew that he was likely to either ignore her or laugh at her, but it felt good to get her annoyance out.

Her bags were still scattered about and Steph did not in any way feel like unpacking. Flopping down on her bed next to her phone she let out a long sigh. She covered her eyes with her arm. This was going to royally suck, she thought, smiling to herself a bit at her vampire pun. She heard the sound of footsteps and slowly removed her arm from her face. The door opened to reveal her roommate and Steph attempted a small smile. ”Uh hi I’m Steph, I’m your new roomie I guess,” she said as she sat up.

Rose left the lawns and started to walk around the academy, although she wasn't that new anymore there were still places where she had never visited before. Another small part of her didn't want to go back to her dorm. Today was the day, the day that she got her new roommate. Upon arriving she had been told that she was to have her room all to her self but that wasn't the case anymore. A new girl had arrived not too long ago and was now sharing a room with Rose; she just hoped that this girl was nice. So far her “adventure” had produced no results. Maybe she was really bad a discovering new places or maybe it was the nerves from the roommate situation.

No matter, she was tired and annoyed. She must be hungry. She still wasn't sure how to defiantly know when she was supposed to know what Vamp side effect needed maintenance but she was getting the hang of it. Rose took off. Super speed had been her new best friend. It was the neatest thing in the world. She reached the woods on the edge of town, to try and hunt again. This had been a reoccurring problem for Rose. The woods where she was, was the spot where she had been attacked in the first place and where her fathers murder had been. Rose had been trying to trick herself into hunting in these woods since she had turned but it hadn't worked, and still didn't. She turned back and was soon back in the academy.

Rose decided that she would get something later. She assumed she couldn't stay away from her room forever. She made her way back to her room, slowly she opened the door and a girl was lying on the other bed. Her bags were scattered around.

”Uh hi I’m Steph, I’m your new roomie I guess,”

Rose smiled “Hi Steph…looks like it” she said. Rose entered the room and after closing the door, took a seat on her bed across the room. “I’m Rose by the way” she added. Eyeing the bags and by her overall attitude Rose could tell that this girl did not want to be here. Rose smiled again “I see you haven’t unpacked…don’t worry I wouldn't unpack if I was staying at a place that I didn't wanna be at either. I don’t think I unpacked until like the second week. I guess I kept expecting my mother to come and get me and tell me this was just a joke.” She said warmly. Maybe this Steph wasn't going to be so bad after all.

Steph’s smile grew a bit when Rose said she didn’t unpack until her second week. It made Steph feel a bit better about not wanting to be there. At least she wasn’t the only one. As much of a hermit as she tended to be, Steph didn’t want to feel totally alone. That was unpleasant. She supposed it wouldn’t be absolutely horrible to have a roommate around. The girl seemed nice enough, which was better than Steph expected if she was being honest. The baby vamp didn’t have very high expectations for Collisions Falls and it’s students.

Frankly she didn’t have high expectations for most people, but in a town full of supernatural freaks, she was even less enthused. Oh she was aware that she was a supernatural freak now herself, but she certainly hadn’t come to accept that fact. It just added fuel to her self-hatred fire. She was willing to give Rose a slight chance, as she did have to share a room with her. ”So um how long have you been her?” Steph asked, in a lame attempt at small talk. Small talk was not something Steph was good at or remotely enjoyed. Unfortunately it was required for socialization.

Normal. Her roommate was perfectly normal. Rose wasn't sure why she had been so nervous in the first place. Besides, another vampire on campus was always a bonus. The more there were of them, the more Rose felt normal and accepted in her new life. Steph smiled and Rose returned the smile happily. The unpacked bags that lay on the floor between the two beds separated the two young girls.

”so um how long have you been her?”

"Two years...give or take a month or two" she replied, tapping her thumb on her wrist. "It isn't that awful you know...once you get used to it." she added looking up from her wrist. "Everyone is just like you, they know what you're going through and can sometimes help when you have questions" she said, remembering her conversation with Logan about the daylight rings. He had been at and around the academy so long that he knew stuff that she couldn't possibly dream up in her wildest dreams.

"So what is your story?" she asked. That might have been a weird question she thought to herself "Everyone has a story...how they got here...what or who made them how they are...their story" she rephrased with a smile.

After all, the talking was coming from the dorm next to her own. Her eyes flickered over to the wall where said dorm would be as she pondered. She wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. Not at all! It just was easy to do, on accident, when you had super hearing. Her eyes flickered back down to the book she was trying to read. Her eyes scanned the pages as she tried to zone out the talking. For a while it worked. But when Summer got comfortable as the other dorm went silent for a few minutes, she wasn’t expecting the talking once again. Sure. The talking wasn’t that bad. All she could hear was mumbles; if she had some music playing softly she wouldn’t be able to hear them at all. But then again….she had yet to meet her new next door dorm mates. Though Summer had been here for quite a few years, that didn’t mean that she would know every vampire that attended the academy. With a sigh, she closed her book and put it on her bedside table. She quickly stood, tugging on a sweatshirt at the same time, and walked over to her door. Before she stepped out into the hallway, she glanced back for a moment. Currently, she was the only one in her dorm and if it stayed that way then it was going to be a quiet year. With a sigh, she stepped out into the hallway, closing the door securely, and stepped a couple feet to the right for the other dorm. She hesitated only a moment before lifting her hand and giving a couple raps on the door with her knuckles. With that done, she folded her arms across her chest and stared at the floor, causing her hair to fall slightly to the front of her face, while waiting for them to answer.

WHEN I WAS DROWNING

Steph raised her eyebrows when Rose said it wasn’t bad once you got used to it. Steph highly doubted she was going to get “used to it.” In fact she planned on actively avoiding getting used to the school. It was nice of Rose to assure here that the other kids would be happy to help, but Steph wasn’t quite buying it. ”Yeah um I’m not really the ask for help type. Or really the social type at all…” She shrugged slightly. ”This isn’t so bad though.” She attempted a small smile at the other girl.

”As for my story uh...it’s a bit complicated…” Steph’s voice trailed off. It wasn’t that complicated really, but she didn’t feel like sharing it. It was too personal and not exactly a pleasant one. Certainly not something to share with someone she just met. ”Let’s just say I didn’t exactly plan on being a vampire.” Steph was saved from having to talk further by a knock on the door. ”Oh! Let me go get that…” She hopped up and went to the door.

When she opened it she saw another girl about their age wearing a super cool Harry Potter sweatshirt. ”Uh hey...are we being too loud or something? Sorry if we are. Cool sweatshirt by the way.”

One thing that Rose was sure of was that Steph was not about to go get an academy sweater any time soon. She felt bad for her, she knew the feeling that some place was so wrong for you yet it was exactly what you got. The school had its perks but it definitely had it’s downsides but after spending her two years at the academy Rose had learned to accept it and just grit her teeth and bear with the problems that came with it. Rose nodded. “I know it is frustrating here but the people here really do help. If not them you can always talk to me about whatever you need.” She said smiling “and if you don’t want to talk and just keep to yourself the whole time you’re here, that’s fine too.” She added

Rose chuckled “Don’t worry you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, I never tell people my story either. I just like knowing things.” The conversation was cut short by a knock on the door. Steph was quick to jump up and get the door. Rose smiled to herself and rolled her eyes, this girl really didn't like talking about anything. The door opened and there stood Summer Frost. Rose didn't know the girl personally; she only knew her name because she was a vampire and so basically the two girls had class every single day with each other. It wasn't hard to look at the person with their hand raised when their name was called.

“Yes sorry. Then again everything is loud for vampire’s right?” she said smiling, she knew that this power wasn't the greatest and was really only good for eavesdropping that didn't always come in handy. Sometimes Rose wishes that she could unhear things that others whisper about.

It didn’t take long for the door to be answered, literally only moments later Summer was looking up and was being greeted by who she assumed was a new vampire to the school. Being here for so long, even if you didn’t know everyone’s names, you got used to faces. This was a face Summer had yet to see. Summer gave a little shrug and a smile after the girl was finished speaking. ”Not particularly. I could just barely hear the murmurs, but I figured it be nice to hop on over and see who was dorming next to me.” Summer’s eyes flicked behind the new vampire to see Rose on what Summer assumed was her own bed. She gave a small wave to her.

Summer couldn’t help but give a slight pause until she remembered that her sweatshirt was complimented. As she ran over the words in her head she figured this girl was being truthful and not sarcastic like some of the times people had commented on her sweatshirt. She couldn’t help her love of the books, and if she thought of herself as a Gryffindor, no one had to know. Her smile grew a bit bigger before she spoke again. ”Thanks! I got it when my family and I went on a vacation to Florida a year ago.”

And then she was holding out her hand. ”I’m Summer Frost by the way.” She waited to see if this other girl would shake her hand before letting it drop back to her side.

WHEN I WAS DROWNING

Steph had completely forgotten about the vampire hearing thing. The whole enhanced senses was still new to her. The fact that she was in a school with only other supernatural beings still hadn’t hit home either. She didn’t think about how being in a dorm meant she would possibly accidentally overhear things all the time. Great, now I have that to worry about too, she thought with a small frown. Realizing she was frowning she forced a smile again, her eyes flicking from the new girl to Rose on her bed, figuring they must already know each other.

”Oh wow that’s super cool. I’ve always wanted to go there. I’m not a huge reader, but I love Harry Potter.” Steph actually did smile at that. She was a bit of a closet nerd. Not a huge one, but there were some things she got a bit fangirly about. ”I’m Stephanie Hale” She shook the girl’s hand, hoping that she hadn’t heard her name before. Steph was going for flying under the radar here. At least that was the plan. Someone was bound to recognize her eventually, but the longer she could go without dealing with that the better.

She now regretted not taking Lysander up on his offer to give her a whole new identity. At least then she could just claim she looked like that pop star. But no, she had been insistent on keeping her own name. Ah well, not much to be done about that now. ”Uh do you want to come in? I mean if Rose doesn’t mind…” she asked, a tad awkwardly.

It wasn't uncommon that dorms had visitors; Rose just had never really had any. The two separate wings of the Vampire dorms were separated by gender and the only real friend that Rose had made so far was Logan. The quest for friendship was not one that Rose had traveled in all the time she had spent at the academy. Two years and she was just starting to make friends. Well to be fair, two years for a vampire was five minutes. So technically it’s been five minutes until Rose started to make friends. That sounded better. Rose smiled as Summer waved to her. This was about as good a time as any for Rose to start making some girl friends. Having one friend and that friend being in the opposite wing was no way she was going to spend her time at the academy, since her mother wasn't coming after all.

“Florida” Rose mused “must be nice and warm there.” Rose wasn't allowed out of the academy, considering the circumstances. Killing your own father counts as permanent detention in the academy, sure she saw Reid, who was the vampire newbie trainer, but she ended up making up some story and Bing Bang Boom Rose was out of his constant watch. Sometimes you’re just better off with a really good lie.

“By all means enter.” Rose said as she hung off the edge of her bed, looking at her dorm from an upside down perspective. “I don’t control who enters and who doesn't …this is as much my room as it is yours Steph” she added astounded at the girls regard for others, given her attitude when she had first met the newbie vampire. Maybe she had to see Reid as well, Gods he was so awkward, and while trying to teach her to protect herself from the few threats to her kind she almost staked herself through the heart to end it all.

Even though Summer had been at the academy ever since she had been able to attend, there were still people that she had yet to meet. She was sociable, sure, but she also enjoyed just sitting outside and reading. Not only that, but there were quite a lot of students attending and learning everyone’s name would take some time. Summer couldn’t help the small grin that overtook her features as the girl in front of her commented that she liked Harry Potter. ”It’ll be nice to have another Potterhead so close then.” As Rose spoke about the weather, Summer found herself nodding before her face took on a bit of a thoughtful look as she tried to remember back to her trip.

”Oh yes. Very warm. But also a bit humid. I’m glad I’m not living there.” She crinkled her nose, she couldn’t understand how people could deal with living in that type of weather for the rest of their lives. As the girl in front of her introduced herself, Summer raised an eyebrow curiously. That name sounded a little familiar to her. But she couldn’t exactly place it. She’d have to figure it out later, she supposed it didn’t really matter.

As Summer was invited into the room, she grinned. ”Thanks.” She stepped in and looked around for a moment before sitting down in one of the desk chairs. She spun for a second before her eyes landed on Rose and she couldn’t help but give a little laugh. ”That looks comfortable?” Her eyes then flicked over to Stephanie. ”So how do you like it here so far?” She didn’t know exactly how long Stephanie had been here, but even if she’d only been here since that morning, she would still have a slight opinion on the school.

It was 4:03 in the afternoon, Rose had her head hanging off the side of her bed, Stephanie sat on her own bed and Summer sat in one of their desk chairs. Rose was doing nothing but talking with the other vamps in her dorm and it turned into a perfect afternoon. She couldn’t explain what it was, maybe the tranquility of it all, but it was really nice for a change. The other two girls talked about their similar taste in Harry Potter, the boy wizard series. Rose never really had time for reading anymore than she did when she was younger and so she never got a chance to read the series, she decided not to mention that. She knew how protective some people could get over their book series.

Rose nodded “True enough. I mean I could wear shorts any time I wanted to in Florida but being there all the time …sometimes a girl just needs to wear some leggings you know” Rose said in secret defense of her extensive legging collection. It almost looked as if Summer recognized Stephanie, Rose wondered to herself if they had met before the academy, it was a rare occurrence but she supposed not impossible. It just wasn’t anything Rose had experienced; she had grown up with normal kids in a semi normal town with normal parents. She didn’t even know about anything mythical until she came to the academy.

Sure the academy was in her town and the building had always been there but she had always been told to never go near that building that it was a haunted abandoned insane asylum. Being the age that she was it wasn’t that hard to understand why she never went near the (appeared to be empty) building. When in reality there was a school that went on in there and she was apart of that now.

“No problem” she smiled, bringing herself back to reality. Rose rolled over onto her stomach “It was for a bit but then the blood rushed to my head…hahaha that’s weird to say now being a vampire and all” she said, having a new appreciation for the feeling. Rose glanced at Stephanie as Summer asked her the question that everyone got as soon as they were noted as new meat on campus. Rose had gotten it from loads of people her first few weeks, she pretended to like the academy to spare faculty feelings and then eventually she began to believe her own words.
