The holidays were over and Reid was none too thrilled about it. He had enjoyed being a free spirit in Collision Falls. The holidays were really the only times he was allowed to leave the academy. Reid didn't have much to go home to though. Since his mother was tracking down his father all over the world, Reid was free to roam about. He did go back to the academy every night because going home would feel weird. He hadn't been home in such a long time. Maybe he was scared ...no that wasn't it. Reid would not be scared by something so trivial as an empty house.

End of the holidays meant that he now had classes to go to. Groaning, Reid made his way to the classrooms. He had mythology and it was partner day. He could tell it was going to be a bad day. He didn't know many of the people in his class and his best friend Mason wasn't in his class. Which meant for Reid that his partner was going to be chosen by the teacher. Swell. That never went well for Reid. Sometimes he just wanted to do projects by himself.

Miss Tyler began to read aloud the project outline: "Create a newspaper that the Gods might have read. You will need to include popular sections just like a real newspaper: sports, world news, local news, entertainment, comics, advice column, etc. Make sure that the contents of your newspaper reflect all your knowledge of Greek Mythology and the Odyssey. Your project will be graded on the amount of knowledge that you present, the creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good writing." The whole class moaned in protest. Reid, wasn't that worried though. He loved Greek mythology.

And then the two words that Reid hated the most in the world were spoken "Buddy Up!" Normally he would be with Mason and they would have a great laugh while doing the project but this time he was solo. Reid scanned the room looking to check if everyone was partnered up, maybe if he was lucky he could do the project alone.

No such luck. Miss Tyler saw him and immediately assigned him a partner. Her partner was missing today and they had to be here for the assignment. Summer Frost was her name...maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.

Mythology was one of Summer’s favorite classes. But it really sucked when her best friend wasn’t there. Since Summer’s family lived in Collision Falls, and her control was really good, she was allowed to go home. And of course she took the opportunity to spend time with her mom and dad since she hardly saw them except for holidays. The only thing that sucked though was that one of her best friends, who also had Mythology the same time as she, hadn’t come back from her break yet. Lacy lived in England and because of that, she had flown over to her family.

But something happened to where her plane ride back home was postponed a few days. So Summer was stuck in the class alone. Sure, she knew some of the other people in the class. But it was different to not have her best friend in the class with her. She let out a sigh as she twirled her pencil in her hand as the teacher started to talk about the project. But she couldn’t help but give a small smile as she heard the topic. Greek Mythology was something she really loved. There were times when she wished at least some of the things were real, though no one ever told her that none of it was.

But as soon as the words were spoken to pick a buddy, Summer’s head shot up. No. Not now when Lacy wasn’t in her class! That meant that Miss. Tyler was going to assign a partner to her! She looked at the teacher with wide eyes, hoping upon everything that she wouldn’t get stuck with someone that wouldn’t help with the work. This was a big assignment and it would take both of their equal participation to complete it on time and to perfection.

But then Miss. Tyler assigned her to Reid Lockwood. Her head turned slightly to look at him with a small smile. He wasn’t a bad guy. She had talked to him, just in passing, a simple hi. But it was enough to know he was a good guy and not only that, but pretty cute as well. She gathered her stuff and walked over to his desk since for the rest of the class they would start their research. Already the room was filling with quiet chatter as people started talking to their buddies. She placed her bag on the desk to the right of Reid and slid in before speaking. ”Hi Reid. How do we want to go about this?” She smiled softly at the boy next to her.

Summer Frost, how would one describe such a beautiful girl with mundane words? There was only one answer: you didn't. Reid could not find the proper words he needed to describe her. She sat next to him and she smelled really good, he immediately regretted that thought. What if her power was that she could read minds? Could she read minds? No he was being paranoid and nervous now; he knew the vampire powers after all he had been one since he was born. Reid shook his head slightly, annoyed and a little embarrassed that he was this nervous around a creature as simple as a girl. It wasn't even that she was a vampire, a vampire he could handle, shifters he could handle, even Mason’s dream powers he could handle but when it came to girls … Reid was as lost as a kid in a supermarket that had just gotten separated from their parents.

Oh shit, what did she say? Was that a hello? “Hey Summer, how’s it hanging?” he asked, giving off a brilliant smile. How’s it hanging? Really Reid? Well it was already out there and there was no taking it back. “I was thinking we could do a sort of old scroll idea like in Ancient Greece.” He threw the idea out as he began a note on ideas that could go on this parchment. He was distracted though, he couldn't think about anything with her sitting next to him, what was wrong with him. Reid glanced sideways at the young girl, well not really young per say. He didn't know when she was transformed or if she was born, if she was 100 years old or 18. It was always hard to tell with the magical creatures of Collision Falls.

“So” he started at an attempt for small talk “how were your holidays?” he asked as he began to tug on the sleeve of his new sweater. Why did she make him so nervous? Other girls he knew didn't make him this nervous…oh wait he didn't really talk to other girls …that was Mason’s job. Mason talked to the girls and Reid stayed in the background. “Did you go and see your family?” he asked. He knew some of the students weren't allowed to leave campus because they were too new or too impulsive. He thanked god everyday that he was born a vampire and had been taught the essentials and control. Figuratively of course because Reid couldn't say the Lord’s name out loud…it burned his throat. This was just another perk of being one of the damned creatures that roamed the earth. Lucky him.

Summer couldn’t help but smile as Reid smiled at her and asked her the simple question. He had a nice smile. And unlike some people, his smile actually had dimples which she thought were really really cute. It was a smile she wished he kept for his life and never stopped doing. ”I’m good. And yourself?” She couldn’t help but give a small laugh that at his choice of words. And when he started talking about his idea, she nodded along. ”That sounds like a really good idea. I think there may even be parchment like that that the wizards use sometimes. We could get some from them or one of the stores in town?” As she saw him began to make notes, she also brought a piece of paper out and began to jot ideas down.

As she jotted down ideas, she paused when Reid started to speak once more. She looked up at him and couldn’t help the small smile that graced her features. When she went to speak, she stopped as she saw him start fidgeting with his sweater. It was hard to not notice the little things with eyesight as sharp as a vampire. She blinked a couple times as she questioned why he seemed so nervous in her own head. But instead, she answered the questions he had asked. ”They were amazing. My little brother and I went home. Which home is in town so it wasn’t that much of a scenic difference. But it was still nice to just relax, ya know?”

She paused slightly to jot down another idea that had came to her, before speaking again. ”And how were yours? Did you get to see your family?” She put down her pencil and folded her arms on top of the desk she sat at while looking at him curiously. It was hard to tell which vampires were born and which ones were made, but usually only the born vampires could go home as they knew control. And Summer was always thankful for the control her family taught her. Thanks to her family’s control, they taught her to keep a schedule and to never break it. And she never did. She always kept on top of it. But she gave a slight pause as she tried to remember the last time she fed.

It had been a couple days…right? Or was it last week? Why couldn’t she remember?! She breathed in deeply to try and remember and at the same time that she did, it was unfortunate that one of the non-vampires in the room sliced their finger on some paper. She closed her mouth instantly and tried to ignore the small pangs of hunger that were going through her body. How could she forget something so simplistic as sticking to her plans!? Her eyes flicked around the room and when her eyes landed on the girl that was holding her hand up as a small trail of blood ran down her finger. Summer swallowed and she could feel her fangs start elongating and her eyes growing darker.

Quickly she reached out to Reid’s arm and grabbed onto it. Her eyes flicked from the girl to Reid. ”We have a problem.” Her words came out slightly lisped as her tongue her fangs. ”Get me out of here. Please.” Her face showed worry and she gave a slight whimper of pain at the feeling of hunger that was flowing through her body in waves as her body knew that there was blood in the room that she wasn’t drinking. This wasn’t good not at all. And now she was feeling so dumb for not remembering to drink a yesterday like she was supposed to.

That smile that stretched across her face was so infectious that Reid couldn't help but smile back and her laugh it was indescribable. He had always noticed Summer around the Academy, it was hard not to, they were some of the few vampires at the Academy that had been there for so long that eventually you loose track. “I’m good, it has been a bit hard getting from vacation mode back into school mode but it will get easier.” He said smiling “It’s at least a break from all the supernatural at this school” he added on. Reid was fine with all the supernatural creatures at Collision Falls Academy, hell he was one himself, it was just a nice change every once in a while. Listening to her ideas for the project he brightened up “Yeah! That’s a great idea; I can talk to one of the students or teachers and maybe get my hands on some of it.” He said drifting into thought. If he just said it was for a school project, none of the teachers would object to it. He added it to his notes

There was that perfect smile again. Her eyes darted down to his sleeve; he should have known better it was hard to hide something from a vampire with super heightened senses. Reid immediately stopped his fidgeting. He needed to stop being so nervous…maybe he could pretend she was Mason. No that would never ever work, it would be easier to not be nervous but also there was no way his mind would do that or even have that power. There was no time to make a mental pros and cons list in his head because she started discussing her vacations. “That sounds awesome, I’m glad you had a good vacation and just a break from the Academy in general” he said smiling as he wrote down some more ideas towards their project.

“Mine?” he asked “Umm they were good I didn't really do anything special” he added thinking of his vacations. They were spent at the Academy, practically starring at the ceiling of his dorm. “I didn't see my family…they were busy, doing other things” he tried to think of something but other things was the best he could come up with. Reid wasn't about to tell this girl right off the bat that his father was missing and his mother was tracking him down like a hunter. He couldn't imagine spending his whole life chasing someone, like his mother was doing because if someone doesn't accept you at your worst …they don’t deserve you. The amount of times he had tried to explain that to his mother when he was little was more times than he could count at such a young age. She left anyways leaving her only son abandoned on the steps of the academy.

Coming out of his dazed memories of his dysfunctional family he noticed Summer tense. “Summer….what’s wrong” he said but the answer became too clear too quickly. A girl, a few tables over just cut her finger on the edge of her paper. Oh no. Reid looked into Summer’s eyes with concern, her fangs were coming out and her eyes were darkening. Nails were digging into his arm, and on that hand he noticed that she had her daylight ring on. An idea popped into his mind “Hold on.” He said as he grabbed Summer around the waist and just ran, super speed kicking in. They reached the courtyards within seconds. Reid figured that he could explain it to Miss Tyler later on. He looked up into the sky and squinted at the sun until he turned back to Summer. “Are you OK?” he asked hoping that she was and that the hunger would subside until he could get her to wherever she did her feeding.

Summer couldn’t help but nod along to what Reid was saying about school. It was hard to get back into the swing of things after vacation. Especially when you got used to sleeping in and then you couldn’t thanks to classes in the mornings. The only good thing about not being at the school, to Summer, was not having to deal with some of the meaner students like Chase or Otto. She could handle with them not being in the school anymore. It would make things so much better. His enthusiasm was contagious and Summer couldn’t help but get just the slightest bi more excited for this project. She was glad that she had Reid for a partner. He seemed like a very reliable person and she had no doubt that they would actually have fun.

As Summer heard that Reid’s holidays weren’t very exciting, she gave a slight frown. That’s never fun to not do anything exciting over the holidays. What kind of holiday was that? And for a second Summer grew a little ticked off. Who could leave their son at the academy and claim to be busy with other things instead of spending time with him? She looked down at the table as she bit her lip to keep her comments to herself though. Although she wished she knew Reid enough to let him know how she felt, as of right now she didn’t. So she sighed, and that was when all things went downhill.

Summer bit into her lip to keep herself from wanting to lunge. She had control. She could do this. It would be fine. She repeated those words to herself in her head until she heard Reid speaking. She nodded her head, slightly afraid to speak least the smell come in stronger waves. He slid his arm around her waist and within what seemed like seconds they were running out the classroom door and into the courtyard. As soon as they were outside, Summer was breathing deeply to try and get the scent of the fresh blood out of her mouth. Her eyes closed as she unconsciously leaned closer to Reid to rest his head on his shoulder since his arm was still around her waist.

As he asked her if she was okay, she gave slight pause. Her tongue ran over her teeth and when she didn’t feel her fangs anymore she gave a sigh of relief and opened her eyes. But her eyes seemed to widen as she realized what she was doing and immediately she took her head off of his shoulder. She slowly stepped out of his arm, and crossed her arms over herself. She had no doubt that she would be blushing if it were possible as she looked down at the ground for a moment before finally looking him in the eyes again. Her eyes were still darker than normal, but at least her fangs were no longer elongated. ”A little bit better. Still a bit hungry though. Thanks by the way. ”

She dropped her head back and let out a groan as she let the sun hit her face. ”How could I be so stupid to forget my schedule!?” She dropped her head again and ran a hand through her hair as she let out a huff of air. But then a thought crossed her mind and she looked at Reid with a tilted head and a curious expression. ”How were you not affected at all? Not even your eyes grew darker.” She said as she stepped just the tiniest bit closer to him to see if she could see a difference in his eyes.
